Knitting a scarf

Knitting isn’t just for your grandma anymore! More and more people are discovering this wonderful activity as a way to destress, have fun and create some unique pieces. Knitting is a great way to fight against the fast fashion industry and pick up a fun hobby at the same time.

The projects you can make while knitting is also a very personal gift for your loved ones that they are sure to adore. A scarf is the perfect project for beginners to practice and improve your skills. First you will need to start with the perfect yarn.

Selecting the yarn and needles

There are a variety of different material you can work with for knitting, here at Bellepaga we recommend our alpaca wool yarnAlpaca wool is a very high quality material and is the only wool that does not pill. It is incredibly warm and soft, it is sure to make a luxurious scarf. The yarn is available in a wide range of colours to suit your personal style.

Next is selecting the needles, generally speaking, the medium sizes are the best for beginners. You should look for a width size of 4mm, 4.5mm, or 5mm. For the length, usually a good starter size is a 10-inch needle, they are small enough to handle easily for most people.

How to Knit

To start, prepare your materials. You have two ends to the yarn, the short end, which is tied to the slip knot and the long end which leads to the ball of yarn.

First start by making a slip knot with about 15cm of yarn sticking out and fasten it to one needle. You also have two ends to the needle, the dull end and the sharp end. We need to ‘cast’ about 20-22 stitches of yarn on to the needle. To cast simply make a small loop around the needle with the long end facing the dull end of the needle. Repeat this step until all the stitches are all on one needle. Now here is where the fun begins.

Push your second needle in between the first needle and the loop and take you long end of the yarn. With the long end wrap the yarn around the second needle counterclockwise. Next is the tricky step, there should be a small space where the stitch and the looped yarn overlap. push the second needle through this loop from the top to the bottom and pull it off of the first needle completely.

You have now made your first knit, now repeat this step over and over again.

Changing the Colour

If you want to add another colour to add more personality, it's easy to do! When you want to change the colour, just loop counterclockwise the new colour around the second needle when you are doing the knit. Cut the excess of the original colour off and continue with the new colour. we recommend to change colours when all the stitches are on the right side of the needle for a seamless look.

How to finish the scarf

To finish the scarf first you have to make two regular stitches. Then with the left needle push it through the loop of the first stitch and pull it up and over the second stitch off the right needle. Be sure to catch the second stitch with the right needle. Now you should have one stitch on the right needle. Do another stitch so you have two stitches on the right needle again and repeat the process. left needle through the first stitch, up and over the second stitch and catch the second stitch with the right needle.

Now when you reach the end of the row and you only have one stitch left, cut yourself a tail from the long end, leave about 15cm of yarn. Wrap the tail counterclockwise around the needle and push through the loop to tie off the scarf and you are finished!
