5 Unique places in Belgium to discover this summer

Every summer it's the same dilemma, finding nice activities to do during the holidays that will change us from our daily routine and make us dream. Fortunately, you don't need to travel the world to find magical places, Belgium is full of hidden gems just waiting to be discovered. In Flanders, Wallonia or Brussels, there is something for everyone!

That's why we've put together a list of our 5 favorite unusual places in Belgium to discover with family, friends, or even on your own if you feel like it. Be prepared to be amazed.

Reading between the lines, Borgloon

Created by architect Gijs van Vaerenbergh, Reading between the lines is a 'transparent' church in Borgloon, Limburg. The work of art is 10 metres high and consists of 100 layers of steel sheeting stacked in the shape of a church. The construction weighs no less than 30 tons! Thanks to this special construction method, the landscape remains visible through the church, both from far and near. As a result, the church is both present and absent from the landscape.

Japanese Garden, Hasselt

The Japanese Garden of Hasselt is the result of a collaboration between the city of Itami in Japan and Hasselt. In November 1991, Hasselt gave Itami a carillon tower, and Hasselt was given a Japanese garden as a symbol of their friendship. This garden is an extension of the Kapermolen Park in Hasselt, which has an area of 2.5 hectares.
In this park, three parts can be distinguished: a transitional area with the park, the Japanese garden itself, which is arranged around a piece of water, and the last part, the Cherry Orchard, which includes picnic areas and can host various events.

The Bayehon waterfall is the second most important waterfall in Belgium, after the one in Coo, a real must-see! You can get there by taking a nice walk in the middle of nature. The walk is accompanied by the soothing sounds of the water flowing along the waterfall. Of course, the Bayehon waterfall is nowhere near as impressive as the Niagara Falls, but at 9 metres it creates the perfect atmosphere for a relaxing afternoon or a picnic with family or friends.

Barefoot

Have you always wanted to know what it feels like to walk barefoot in the open air? Then this is the activity for you! Discover the first barefoot trail in Flanders and experience the ultimate feeling of freedom. Use all your senses and both feet to observe the special aspects of wood, stones, tree chips, grass, soil and water on a carefully composed path. Cold and warm, wet and dry, pleasant and strange alternate on a route of almost 3 km that is only accessible to bare feet.

The Lommel Sahara covers approximately 193 hectares and consists of pine forests, sand plains and a large lake. The result of sand mining in the 1950s and 1960s. Today the Sahara of Lommel has become the ideal place to have a beach and holiday atmosphere and to enjoy the sun.  If you are not a sun worshipper, the forest is the ideal place for a refreshing walk. The hiking trails vary from 1 to 12 kilometres and run through the wooded landscape.
